AUTOMATIC CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURAL MRI FOR DIAGNOSIS OF NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES Acta biol.Colomb.
DÍAZ,GLORIA; ROMERO,EDUARDO; HERNÁNDEZ-TAMAMES,JUAN ANTONIO; MOLINA,VICENTE; MALPICA,NORBERTO.
This paper presents an automatic approach which classifies structural Magnetic Resonance images into pathological or healthy controls. A classification model was trained to find the boundaries that allow to separate the study groups. The method uses the deformation values from a set of regions, automatically identified as relevant, in a process that selects the statistically significant regions of a t-test under the restriction that this significance must be spatially coherent within a neighborhood of 5 voxels. The proposed method was assessed to distinguish healthy controls from schizophrenia patients. Classification results showed accuracy between 74% and 89%, depending on the stage of the disease and number of training samples.

Interactions of laminin with the amyloid ß peptide: Implications for Alzheimer's disease BJMBR
Morgan,C.; Inestrosa,N.C..
Extensive neuronal cell loss is observed in Alzheimer's disease. Laminin immunoreactivity colocalizes with senile plaques, the characteristic extracellular histopathological lesions of Alzheimer brain, which consist of the amyloid ß (Aß) peptide polymerized into amyloid fibrils. These lesions have neurotoxic effects and have been proposed to be a main cause of neurodegeneration. In order to understand the pathological significance of the interaction between laminin and amyloid, we investigated the effect of laminin on amyloid structure and toxicity. We found that laminin interacts with the Aß1-40 peptide, blocking fibril formation and even inducing depolymerization of preformed fibrils. Protofilaments known to be intermediate species of Aß fibril formation...

Mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders Anais da ABC (AABC)
COLPO,GABRIELA D.; ASCOLI,BRUNA M.; WOLLENHAUPT-AGUIAR,BIANCA; PFAFFENSELLER,BIANCA; SILVA,EMILY G.; CIRNE-LIMA,ELIZABETH O.; QUEVEDO,JOÃO; KAPCZINSKI,FLÁVIO; ROSA,ADRIANE R..
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells that have the capacity to differentiate into all lineages of mesodermal origin, e.g., cartilage, bone, and adipocytes. MSCs have been identified at different stages of development, including adulthood, and in different tissues, such as bone marrow, adipose tissue and umbilical cord. Recent studies have shown that MSCs have the ability to migrate to injured sites. In this regard, an important characteristic of MSCs is their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects. For instance, there is evidence that MSCs can regulate the immune system by inhibiting proliferation of T and B cells. Clinical interest in the use of MSCs has increased considerably over the past few years, especially because...
